Bianet Women’s News Editor Evrim Kepenek was sentenced to 10 months in prison for “violating the confidentiality of an investigation” in connection with her reporting on the alleged sexual abuse and death of a two-year-old child in Beylikdüzü, Istanbul. The court postponed the announcement of the verdict.

Evrim Kepenek stated that there was no confidentiality order on the file at the time she reported the news, that she acted in the public interest, and that she did not use the names of either the child or the family in her report. Her lawyer, Deniz Yazgan Şenay, also emphasized that Kepenek had no malicious intent and requested an acquittal.

After evaluating the defenses, the court announced its decision without adjourning the hearing.
