The Confederation of Kurdish Communities in Germany (KON-MED) has issued a statement condemning the ongoing attacks on the Druze population in Syria and calling for immediate sanctions against the self-proclaimed transitional government of Al-Sharaa.
KON-MED considers the recent attacks on the Druze civilian population in Syria to be violence against minorities, on a par with the massacres of Alawites living in the Syrian coastal region in March and April of this year. It believes that the media’s repeated coverage of clashes with Bedouins serves to legitimize the military interventions of those in power in Damascus.
Pluralistic reality requires decentralized structures
However, the measures taken by the transitional government revealed “the Islamist leanings of the interim government,” emphasized the German umbrella organization, adding: “In this context, it should not be forgotten that Turkey under Erdoğan’s leadership was and remains the biggest supporter of Islamist groups in Syria.”
The current situation also proves that the “pluralistic reality of societies” in Syria and throughout the Middle East requires a corresponding solution, said KON-MED: “The “one state, one nation” model is therefore not an option, despite recent suggestions to this effect by US Special Representative for Syria Thomas Barrack. It constantly generates conflict, racism, and state violence. Syria is the bloodiest example of this.”
According to KON-MED, the establishment of decentralized state structures is the only solution for a “peaceful and free life in Syria,” as exemplified by the coexistence in the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES).
Call for targeted sanctions
KON-MED concluded its statement with clear demands on regional and international policymakers: “Immediate protective measures for the Druze are necessary. Targeted sanctions against the Islamist interim government are also needed immediately. It must not be courted any longer. The partners for building a democratic Syria are the societies of the country, not the Islamists.”
