Helen George, the 41-year-old star of Call the Midwife, has publicly shared that she was diagnosed with ADHD following the birth of her second daughter, Lark, three-and-a-half years ago. Speaking candidly on the podcast I’m ADHD! No You’re Not, George discussed how the diagnosis has shaped her approach to daily life and parenting.

Helen George revealed her ADHD diagnosis

The actress, known for her portrayal of Nurse Trixie Aylward, described a “lightbulb moment” that came during a conversation with a friend who has ADHD. The friend spoke about women who are diagnosed later in life, prompting George to realize she exhibited similar traits. “He was telling me all this, and then I suddenly went, ‘Oh [expletive], just like me,’” she recalled, noting the insight helped her understand herself in a new way.

Helen revealed that she now takes medication for the condition

Before this conversation, George had not considered ADHD as a possibility. “I just thought I’m an actress and everyone’s [expletive] crazy,” she said. She added that many actors may share the condition because some ADHD traits can align with skills beneficial in the performing arts.

George has started medication to manage her ADHD and is exploring strategies to live effectively with it. “I’ve got to work out how you can function best so that you can mother best, so that their lives can be the best that they can be,” she explained, emphasizing her focus on her daughters’ well-being. George shares Lark and her elder daughter, Wren, with her former Call the Midwife co-star and ex-partner, Jack Ashton.

Helen stepped out at the London Cabaret Club on Wednesday night

Despite the personal revelation, George continues to maintain a busy professional life. She recently attended an event at the London Cabaret Club celebrating a new programme supporting young performers, created in partnership with The King’s Trust. Observers noted she was in high spirits, enjoying the evening with friends.

George’s disclosure coincides with a pause in Call the Midwife’s production. The long-running BBC drama, which premiered in 2012, is taking a break to make way for a film and a prequel series. The prequel will explore life in Poplar during World War Two, while the upcoming film, set in 1971, will feature familiar characters from the original series, with returning cast members expected to reprise their roles.

Season five of the podcast I’m ADHD! No You’re Not launches Thursday, with new episodes available across all platforms.
