Dame Prue Leith has offered a candid perspective on ageing, describing love as a central pillar of happiness later in life while embracing a fresh chapter following her departure from The Great British Bake Off.
Now 86, Leith speaks openly about the role emotional connection plays in wellbeing, arguing that fulfilment in later years is closely tied to passion—whether for people, hobbies, or lifelong interests. Her latest book explores these ideas, presenting a more optimistic outlook on ageing and challenging long-held assumptions about growing older.
Love Later in Life
Leith’s personal life reflects that philosophy. After the death of her first husband, she found love again with John Playfair, whom she met in her seventies. She describes falling in love at that stage of life as no less intense than in youth, complete with the same uncertainty and excitement.
The couple married in 2016 and later moved into a shared home designed to suit their mutual tastes. Their relationship, she notes, is strengthened by shared interests and a deep friendship, which she considers essential for lasting companionship.
