Actor reflects on motherhood, grief, and balancing work following the death of ex-partner Roger Michell
British actor Anna Maxwell Martin has spoken candidly about the emotional and practical challenges of raising her two teenage daughters while coping with grief and a demanding career.
The Line of Duty and Motherland star described her family life as a close, resilient unit following the death of her former partner, film and theatre director Roger Michell, who passed away in 2021. The pair share two daughters, Maggie and Nancy.
Life after loss and focusing on family
Reflecting on her current life, Martin emphasized that her children remain her central priority. She described her household as positive and grounded, noting the strength and humor of her daughters as a source of support.

She also acknowledged the ongoing nature of grief, saying she continues to manage day-to-day responsibilities including parenting and work while trying to support her children’s wellbeing and development.
Balancing work and emotional strain
Martin also discussed how returning to stage work after her loss felt disorienting, particularly during a production of The Constituent. She noted the absence of someone she once relied on for emotional reflection, though she no longer engages in imagining conversations with him.

She added a pragmatic view on coping, suggesting that she prefers to process life directly rather than internal dialogue with those who have died.
Parenting pressures and burnout
The actor spoke about the intensity of juggling multiple responsibilities, acknowledging that she often takes on too much at once. While she enjoys staying active and engaged professionally, she admitted this pace can lead to exhaustion and emotional strain.

She described motherhood as her defining role, stating that her daughters come first even as she continues working in television and theatre.
Moving forward
Following the end of her relationship with Michell prior to his death, Martin has previously described their separation as amicable, emphasizing mutual respect and a lasting friendship.
She is currently in a relationship with camera operator Richard Cornelius, whom she met while working in television production in the years following the COVID-19 pandemic. She has described him as a steady and practical presence in her life.
Martin, who also stars in the series Ludwig, continues to balance a busy acting career with family life, while being open about the emotional realities of loss, parenting, and resilience.
