Award-winning actor and television host Alan Cumming is preparing for another season of hosting the U.S. edition of The Traitors while embracing a new chapter in Scotland as artistic director of a renowned Highlands theatre. The entertainer recently reflected on his connection with fellow The Traitors host Claudia Winkleman, his return to Scotland, and the latest milestones in his multifaceted career.
Friendly Messages Across the Castle
Although both versions of The Traitors are filmed at Ardross Castle, Cumming said he and Winkleman rarely find themselves there at the same time because production schedules do not overlap.
The pair, who host the American and British editions of the hit reality competition, have developed a light-hearted tradition despite their limited encounters. Rather than exchanging advice on hosting duties, they leave notes for one another while working at the castle.
Cumming is set to return to Ardross Castle to film the next season of the U.S. series. While he joked that his familiarity with the location might appear advantageous, he suggested that being a contestant would be far less appealing. Beyond the intense social dynamics and strategic gameplay, he admitted he would miss enjoying the private comforts that come with hosting the show.
A Career Filled With Milestones
Over a career spanning stage, film, and television, Cumming has built an impressive résumé that includes acclaimed performances as the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret, roles in Marvel films as Nightcrawler, and portrayals of figures ranging from the Devil to the Pope.
Yet one of his most recent achievements carried a special sense of nostalgia. The actor expressed delight after being featured in a strip in the iconic British comic The Beano alongside Dennis the Menace, describing the experience as one of the most memorable recognitions of his career.
Returning to His Scottish Roots
Alongside hosting duties and upcoming acting projects, including a role in a forthcoming drama from Russell T Davies, Cumming has taken on leadership of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
The theatre, located in the small Highland town of Pitlochry, has long enjoyed a strong reputation despite its modest size. Under Cumming’s direction, the venue has attracted prominent creative figures, including Maria Friedman and Simon Russell Beale.
Cumming revealed that applying for the artistic director position was unusual for him, noting that he has only formally applied for two jobs in his life. Inspiration for the role came after conversations with former artistic director Elizabeth Newman, which sparked his interest in leading the institution.
Dividing Time Between Scotland and New York
Now spending much of his time in Scotland, Cumming divides his life between the Highlands and New York City’s East Village. He said the arrangement provides a balance between two very different worlds and has become an increasingly important part of his lifestyle.
With preparations underway for another season of The Traitors and a busy theatre programme ahead, Cumming continues to combine international television success with a growing commitment to Scotland’s cultural landscape.
