The search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie, has entered its ninth month, with investigators still working to determine what happened after she disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona, home in the early hours of February 1.
For Savannah, the prolonged investigation has unfolded alongside the demands of her career and family life. Her former Today colleague Hoda Kotb has now offered a glimpse into the emotional strain her friend continues to face, describing the situation as “grueling” while emphasizing Savannah’s determination to keep moving forward.
Kotb, who left Today in early 2025 after 16 years with the program, spoke to USA Today about Savannah and the continuing search for Nancy. Her comments came as Savannah remains publicly involved in efforts to find answers about her mother.
“When I think about Savannah, I think about her words, which are, ‘We won’t rest until we have answers,’” Kotb told USA Today.
“She’s not resting,” Kotb added, describing Savannah as “incredible” and praising her as a mother, wife, sister and daughter. She said that remaining caught in the uncertainty of the investigation must be exceptionally difficult.
Hoda Kotb describes Savannah Guthrie’s ongoing struggle
Kotb’s comments provide an indication of how the disappearance has affected Savannah beyond the public statements and televised appeals that have accompanied the case.
“She’s not allowing them to take what she has in her,” Kotb said. “She’s raising her kids. She’s doing all of the things that she does, and she’s not allowing it. And she’s not resting. Both things are actually true.”

That combination — continuing with everyday responsibilities while remaining focused on the search — has become a defining feature of Savannah’s response to her mother’s disappearance.
Savannah returned to work about two months after Nancy went missing, continuing her role in front of a national television audience while the investigation remained unresolved. Kotb said Savannah’s ability to continue caring for her family and maintaining her professional responsibilities had been a source of inspiration.
“The inspiration that she’s giving, through all of it, to me, is immeasurable,” Kotb told USA Today, acknowledging how unusual it felt to speak in those terms while describing such a painful situation.
The former Today host also revealed that women attending her Joy 101 retreat approached her with messages intended for Savannah.
“They were just like, ‘Listen to me. You tell Savannah that we’re praying for her. You tell her,’” Kotb said.
For Kotb, however, supporting her longtime friend is not necessarily about finding the perfect words. She said she wanted to soothe Savannah and help her, but recognized that friends cannot simply resolve an investigation or remove the uncertainty surrounding a missing loved one.
“I love her dearly,” Kotb said. “I want to soothe her and help her, like her other friends do. And we can’t. But the only thing, I think, as friends and anyone who’s going through anything is just to be present and be around when they need you.”
What is known about Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance
Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home in Tucson on February 1. According to the information reported by HELLO! and subsequent coverage, investigators found several everyday personal belongings inside the house, including her hearing aids, phone, daily medication and wallet.
Blood droplets were also discovered on the front doorstep.

Nancy was last seen the previous evening, January 31, after her son-in-law, Tommaso Cioni, dropped her home following a family dinner.
The circumstances surrounding those final known moments have made the disappearance particularly difficult for Savannah and the rest of her family. Nancy was not simply absent from her home; investigators were faced with indications that she had left behind items that would ordinarily be important to her daily life.
The case has involved local authorities as well as the FBI, but the investigation has continued without a publicly established explanation for Nancy’s whereabouts.
That uncertainty has also meant that Savannah’s public appeals remain an important part of the family’s effort to generate information.
Savannah continues to appeal for answers
Savannah has repeatedly spoken publicly about the disappearance, including through emotional appearances and social-media messages.
In one appeal, she described the difficulty of maintaining strength while emphasizing the values her mother had taught her and her family.
“Every day, we wake up and try to be strong and go on – because that’s what our joyful and resilient Mom taught us to do,” Savannah wrote.
“But make no mistake – our hearts are in ruins.”

She then made a direct appeal to anyone who might possess information about Nancy.
“We are begging for help. We are desperate. We need someone to come forward,” she wrote, stressing that information could be provided anonymously and pointing to the reward being offered.
Her message reflected the central dilemma facing the Guthrie family: continuing ordinary life while waiting for information that could fundamentally change their understanding of what happened.
A family waiting for answers
For families of missing people, the passage of time can create a particularly difficult form of uncertainty. In Nancy’s case, months have passed without a publicly confirmed resolution, leaving Savannah and her family continuing to appeal for information while investigators work to establish what happened.
Kotb’s description of Savannah underscores how that uncertainty exists alongside responsibilities that cannot simply be put on hold. Savannah remains a mother and a working television journalist while also being a daughter searching for answers about her missing mother.

The public nature of her career has also meant that much of her response has taken place in front of viewers. Her appearances have allowed her to speak directly about Nancy while also exposing the emotional reality of a case that remains unresolved.
Kotb’s remarks suggest that those closest to Savannah have focused less on trying to provide answers they do not have and more on remaining present for her.
At her Joy 101 retreat, the messages Kotb received from women wanting Savannah to know they were thinking of her offered another indication of the support surrounding the family.
Yet the central issue remains unchanged: Nancy Guthrie has not been located, and the search for answers continues.
Savannah has repeatedly emphasized that her family will not stop seeking information. As Kotb put it, Savannah’s message remains that “we won’t rest until we have answers.”
For now, that search continues alongside Savannah’s work, family responsibilities and public appeals — a prolonged and painful reality that her former colleague described simply as “grueling.”
