Parliamentary elections will be held in Syria in September for the first time since the fall of the Baath regime. The total number of seats in parliament has been increased from 150 to 210. Seventy of these seats will be appointed by interim president Ahmad al-Sharaa. The remaining 140 seats will be elected by popular vote. Under the new regulations, the representation ratio of provinces will be reorganized based on the 2011 census.

Speaking to SANA, Chairman of the Higher Committee for People’s Assembly Elections, Mohammed Taha al-Ahmad, said that the election process is scheduled to occur between September 15 and 20.

Al-Ahmad said that after the decree for the provisional electoral system is signed, a week will be needed to select subcommittees, followed by 15 days to form the electoral bodies, then three days for candidacy applications, an additional week for campaigning and debates.

According to Al-Ahmad, provisions ensuring women’s participation of at least 20% are also included in the program. He affirmed that the electoral process will be monitored by communities and international organizations under the committee’s coordination, with full freedom to contest lists and results.
