The threat of deportation to Turkey facing Kurdish activist Mehmet Çakas has been temporarily halted following a new legal development. The Administrative Court of Lüneburg has issued an emergency ruling blocking his deportation.

Çakas, a Kurdish politician currently held in Uelzen Prison in Germany, was scheduled to be deported to Turkey on 28 August, tomorrow, despite the risk of facing a life sentence there. His legal team announced that the court’s urgent decision has suspended the deportation until a final ruling is made.

In their statement, the lawyers said: “Mehmet Çakas faced the danger of deportation to Turkey on August 28, 2025. The Foreign Nationals Office and the Interior Ministry of Lower Saxony had pushed for his removal despite the risk of a life sentence. Today, the Administrative Court of Lüneburg issued another urgent ruling, temporarily banning his deportation to Turkey. We now await the court’s final decision. The hearing will be held on 8 September 2025, at the Administrative Court of Lüneburg. A detailed press statement will follow.”

Meanwhile, a planned protest in front of Uelzen Prison in support of Çakas was cancelled today. However, according to a statement from the Kurdish Federation FED-DEM, further actions will be organized to demand a fair asylum process and the right for Çakas to remain in Germany.
