Women prisoners in Istanbul’s Bakırköy Women’s Closed Prison, frequently in the spotlight for rights violations, continue to face severe violence and sentence postponements. Recently, the releases of Delal Tekdemir, Türkan Karadaşlı, and Mekiye Sönük were also blocked on arbitrary grounds. This time, the releases of prisoners Süreyya Bulut and Dilek Öz, who have been in jail for 30 years, were obstructed.

Although they were supposed to be released on 19 August, the release of Süreyya Bulut and Dilek Öz was postponed to 28 November on the grounds of “not demonstrating good conduct.” It was reported that despite prisoner Dilek Öz being considered “of good conduct,” she was nonetheless deemed “not good” because she “did not express remorse for her crime and was not ready to return to society,” while Süreyya Bulut’s postponement was justified with the claim that she “was not of good conduct.”
