A commission is being established in the Turkish Grand National Assembly to seek a resolution to the Kurdish issue and ensure a well-functioning peace process, based on the recent appeal by Abdullah Öcalan. The first step has been taken to form the commission with the participation of all political parties. The Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) has appointed Meral Danış Beştaş, MP for Erzurum (Erzirom) and Co-Spokesperson of the Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK), along with Saruhan Oluç, MP for Antalya, and Cengiz Çiçek, MP for Istanbul.

Ferit Şenyaşar spoke to ANF about the commission’s work, DEM Party MP for Urfa (Riha) and stated: “A new process began in Turkey on October 1 with a gesture of mutual recognition. Then, on February 27, the Kurdish People’s Leader published a perspective. In this message, the Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan said: ‘We are in favor of peace, the PKK is in favor of peace, and my people listen to my word.’ Finally, with the ceremony of burning weapons, the Kurdish people made it clear to the entire world that they are committed to this process and to peace. From this point forward, the responsibility lies with the state and the government.”

The state must respond to the people’s demands

Ferit Şenyaşar emphasized that the Kurdish people have sincerely embraced the peace process. He said, “We are holding meetings with the public across Turkey and Kurdistan. We are trying to explain this process. The Kurdish people and their leader have taken every necessary step for peace. The world is also closely observing these developments.”

Şenyaşar also stressed that the state’s slow and hesitant approach to the process is creating concern both within society and among themselves. He said, “Peace will be achieved one way or another. The state must now take responsibility. Concrete steps are needed to move the peace process forward. Through legal and democratic measures, this process can advance. The state does not currently have a negative stance on this issue. We have legitimate demands. We have legal demands. We have rightful expectations for the democratization of Turkey. We are now in a phase where words are not enough, concrete steps must be taken. The public has serious expectations. The state must respond to the people’s demands.”

The commission will open the door to a solution

Ferit Şenyaşar spoke about the upcoming parliamentary commission to be formed for the peace process. “A formal commission will be set up in the parliament. Each political party will nominate a representative to the commission in proportion to its number of seats. All political parties, except the IYI Party (Good Party), have expressed their willingness to contribute to the process. If no complications arise in the coming week, preparations will be finalized and the commission will begin its work. This commission will give the process an official status. The commission to be formed in parliament will open the door to a solution. It will continue its work throughout the parliamentary recess. The Kurdish movement and Öcalan have already taken every step necessary for peace. From this point forward, the issue will be addressed through constitutional frameworks, legal channels, and democratic means. The commission will carry out comprehensive work aimed at eliminating the root causes of the problems.”
