Turkish police carried out house raids in İzmir, Antalya, Kocaeli and Konya in connection with an investigation initiated by İzmir Public Prosecutor’s Office.

19 people were taken into custody during the raids, including Mehmet Zencir, an ‘academic for peace’. Zencir is apparently accused of having given a speech at a conference in Amed (tr. Diyarbakir). Zencir is one of over a thousand ‘academics for peace’ who protested against the destruction of Kurdish cities with a petition to the Turkish state at the beginning of 2016. He lost his job at Pamukkale University after signing the petition ‘We will not be part of this crime.’ He was acquitted in these proceedings in 2020.

On the other hand, doctor Vedia Yeşim Bayanoğlu is accused of spreading propaganda for a terrorist organisation. It is not yet known what the other detainees are charged with.
