Journalists, university students and political party representatives are among those detained during the demonstrations ongoing since March 19 when the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was taken into custody.

Of the 206 people referred to the courthouse on charges of “violating the law on demonstrations and marches”, 64 were remanded in custody, while 7 were sentenced to house arrest. Procedures continue for the other detainees.

Among those sent to prison are

Left Party members Yağmur Gündoğan, Utku Özay, Ufuk Demirbilek and Fatih Atlay; six members of TKP (Communist Party of Turkey), including Istanbul Provincial Chairman Ahmet Dincel and Party Assembly member Arda Hacıyusufoğlu, Labor Party Youth Branch Central Executive Board Member Selinay Uzuntel; AFP reporter Yasin Akgül, IBB (Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality) photojournalist Kurtuluş Arı, NOW TV reporter Ali Onur Tosun, journalists Zeynep Kuray, Hayri Tunç, Gökhan Kam and Bülent Kılıç. 

According to the Interior Ministry, 1418 people have been detained since March 19.
