In many cities in Europe, rallies were held on Saturday to mark the second anniversary of Jina Mahsa Amini’s death. The Kurdish woman died in a hospital in Tehran on 16 September 2022, after being arrested and mistreated by the Iranian morality police. Her violent death sparked nationwide uprisings and made the slogan “Jin Jiyan Azadî” (Woman Life Freedom), which emerged from the Kurdish women’s movement, known worldwide.

Frankfurt

A demonstration by Kurdish and Iranian organizations took place in Frankfurt am Main. A representative of the Kurdish Women’s Movement in Europe (TJK-E) said in a speech: “Two years ago, the murder of Jina Mahsa Amini by the morality police in Iran brought women onto the streets and sparked a major uprising against the practices of the Iranian regime.

This resistance began in Eastern Kurdistan and Iran and spread in waves across the world. Abdullah Öcalan’s ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ philosophy became universal and the freedom slogan of women’s struggle in all languages.

In the 21st century, the ‘Jin, Jiyan, Azadî’ uprisings are an expression of the great influence of the women’s liberation struggle on a global level and have once again demonstrated the role of women in social change processes. In order to suppress the popular resistance led by women in Eastern Kurdistan and Iran, the state resorted to illegal and inhumane means, killing hundreds of people on the streets and arresting and torturing thousands. In the last two years, countless activists have been imprisoned, tortured and sentenced to death.”

The woman pointed to the threatened execution of women in Iran and called for the lives of the activists Pakhshan Azizi and Sharifeh Mohammadi, who have been sentenced to death, to be saved. The other organizations involved also made statements about the situation in Rojhilat and Iran and called for solidarity.
