Alison Arngrim, best known for portraying the unforgettable Nellie Oleson in Little House on the Prairie, has opened up about the behind-the-scenes atmosphere during the show’s original production, describing a workplace culture that reflected a very different era of Hollywood.

Arngrim, who played the iconic television antagonist from 1974 to 1982, recently shared memories of life on set, recalling that many adult cast and crew members followed habits that were common in the entertainment industry at the time. She described an environment where cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption were routine among adults working on the series.
According to Arngrim, smoking was widespread across the production, with numerous actors and crew members regularly lighting cigarettes during filming breaks. She also recalled that beer was consumed throughout the day, with additional supplies frequently brought to the set when needed.

The actress further revealed that the production’s relaxed attitude toward alcohol extended beyond breaks, claiming that some adults occasionally drank while filming and that many cast and crew members gathered at an informal on-set bar after work to continue socializing.
While the adult workplace culture stood out, Arngrim also reflected on the challenges faced by the show’s younger performers. She said child actors were often subjected to intense competition encouraged by industry professionals, including managers, agents, and ambitious parents.

As the young cast entered their teenage years, Arngrim explained that comparisons over appearance and career opportunities sometimes created unnecessary rivalry. Despite those pressures, she said the cast formed lasting friendships and managed to support one another throughout the series’ run.
Decades after the original show ended, Arngrim has returned to the Little House on the Prairie universe with a brief appearance in Netflix’s reboot. She takes on the role of Ida, an eccentric woman living in the wilderness whose unusual encounter with the Ingalls sisters adds a memorable moment to the new adaptation.

Arngrim said she was excited to accept the opportunity after learning about the quirky nature of the character, describing Ida as an unconventional forest drifter whose mysterious personality made the role especially appealing.
The reboot is also preparing to introduce a new version of Nellie Oleson. Actress Willa Dunn has been cast to portray the iconic character in the second season, with Arngrim expressing enthusiasm about seeing a fresh interpretation of the role that made her a television legend.
