According to information provided by the Fars News Agency based on local police sources, unidentified armed men ambushed two police patrols near the city of Iranshahr.

Five security officers were killed as a result of the shooting. Police reported that the patrols were on routine duty and that an operation has been launched to apprehend those responsible for the attack.

Footage published by local media show a police vehicle riddled with bullets and bodies lying around it. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Sistan-Baluchistan, located on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, frequently makes headlines due to Iran’s discriminatory policies and armed conflicts. The region, where the Baluch people live, is also known as one of the poorest regions in the country.

Iranian authorities have frequently blamed Sunni religious groups for attacks on police and Revolutionary Guards in the region. Chief among these is the organization Jaysh al-Adl (Army of Justice).

The latest attack came after seven members of Ensar al-Furkan were killed last week in an operation launched by the authorities, who were allegedly preparing to attack security facilities.

A day before that operation, a police officer was killed in another attack claimed by Jaysh al-Adl.
