Former Andrea McLean has revealed the extent of the personal and financial struggles she faced after stepping away from daytime television, describing how a series of setbacks left her rebuilding her life from scratch in her fifties.
The 56-year-old broadcaster said she lost her home, savings, health and sense of identity after several business decisions coincided with the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic and a severe health crisis that left her unable to work for an extended period.

McLean had left the ITV daytime programme Loose Women to focus on a lifestyle business she launched with her husband, Nick Feeny. While the venture initially showed promise, the pandemic disrupted operations and placed mounting pressure on the couple financially.
At the same time, McLean suffered a major health emergency involving pneumonia, kidney failure and sepsis, which further affected her ability to continue working. The combined impact resulted in the loss of significant savings and forced major lifestyle changes.
Speaking candidly about the period, McLean said the experience brought feelings of embarrassment and failure, particularly after leaving a successful television career to pursue a business that ultimately struggled.
She explained that the financial difficulties became so severe that she sold personal belongings, including clothes and engagement rings, to help cover daily expenses and provide for her children. McLean also searched for alternative employment outside television, including applying for jobs in cafés.
The television personality said she initially kept the extent of the situation private, with only close family members aware of how serious the circumstances had become. Eventually, she and her family sold their home and relocated to a smaller rental property in Spain.
McLean has now detailed the experience in her new book, Shameless, which focuses on resilience, recovery and the emotional impact of financial hardship later in life.
She said writing openly about the experience helped her move beyond the shame she once felt, adding that trying and failing should not define a person’s worth.
Despite ongoing challenges, McLean said she and her husband have emerged from the experience in a stronger emotional position and remain focused on rebuilding their future together.
Reflecting on the lessons she has learned, McLean said starting over is possible at any stage of life, even after major personal and professional setbacks.
