Barbara Urbanic, the Austrian Communist Party’s (KPÖ) lead candidate for the 2025 Vienna elections, has expressed support for the peace process initiated by the Kurdish Freedom Movement in Turkey.

Barbara Urbanic, the joint first-place candidate for the 2025 Vienna municipal elections with the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) and the LINKS (The Left), has expressed her support for the peace process initiated by the Kurdish freedom movement in Turkey.
The 43-year-old politician, who advocates a solidarity-based feminist policy, stated that they consider the step taken by the Kurdish Freedom Movement towards peace “important and valuable” at a time when international conflicts are intensifying.
Barbara Urbanic said: “Here in Austria and Vienna, we are following the processes initiated by the Kurdish Freedom Movement in Turkey with great interest. As the KPÖ, we have a long tradition of peace policy. At a time when such international conflicts are intense, it is extremely valuable that the Kurdish movement has come forward and said, ‘Enough is enough, let’s end the wars,’ and declared that it is ready to take the first step towards peace. We hope that the Turkish state will respond to this call, accept this offer, and take the necessary steps to achieve lasting peace in Turkey.”
