Speaking at a press conference held at her party’s headquarters, Ayşegül Doğan delivered important messages regarding the peace process.

Emphasizing that Turkey has been seeking peace since 1993, she highlighted the role Öcalan played in this process. Doğan said: “Let’s open the way for participation in democratic politics. If it is necessary to meet with Mr. Öcalan, we should meet; if his suggestions need to be taken, we should take them. Öcalan’s persistent stance on peace has given momentum to the process. His February 27 call, the video message on July 9, and the response on July 11 demonstrate the influence of this leadership.”

Criticizing the commission’s stance regarding the request to speak in Kurdish at its last session, Doğan said: “This should be legally supported. We expected this commission to show some maturity yesterday. Today, we could be talking about something completely different. Nezahat Teke, who wanted to speak in her mother tongue, could have been provided with the opportunity to do so.”

Doğan continued: “Mr. Öcalan is a leader who has accelerated this process. To end the conflict and achieve lasting peace, the commission should listen to Öcalan. This should not be seen only as a demand from the DEM Party. We are talking about resolving a 100-year-old problem. Bold steps need to be taken.”

She further emphasized that the peace process cannot be limited to being seen merely as a demand from the DEM Party, and said: “We are talking about resolving a 100-year-old problem. Bold steps must be taken.” Ayşegül Doğan stressed that the commission should not avoid discussing the method of meeting with Öcalan.

The DEM Party spokesperson also highlighted the need to expand societal dialogue and democratic political space for peace, announcing that events would be held nationwide on 1 September, International Day of Peace, under the slogan ‘Raise your voice for peace.’

She added that they would launch a new campaign called ‘I want peace, because’, and said: “The right to peace belongs to all of us. We want peace because we defend the right to life, equality, truth, and live in security. In a democratic society, no one can infringe on women’s achievements.”
