DEM Party spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan commented on the current issues at a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Ankara on Friday. Doğan criticized the new wave of operations targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, emphasizing that this constitutes interference in the will of the voters.

Ayşegül Doğan stated that political interference by the judiciary has cost the country decades and stressed that, “Turkey cannot democratize without resolving the Kurdish question.”

Reiterating their commitment to the process for peace and a democratic solution, Ayşegül Doğan said that the “peace and democratic society festivals” launched in Cizre are continuing with great enthusiasm, with significant participation from women and young people.

Referring to the parliamentary commission’s work, which gained momentum with the third meeting held last week, Doğan stated that it is critically important for this process to be established on a legal basis.

Commission work and legal framework

Doğan pointed out that the commission’s adherence to the principle of pluralism, acting with the consensus of all political parties, and ensuring that the process is supported by legal regulations are “essential for democratic politics and social peace.”

Stressing that the hearings expected to begin next week should include different segments of society, she referred to the list submitted by the DEM Party to the commission, saying, “This list includes names from different fields who have accumulated experience to date, from legal institutions to rights organizations, from women’s organizations to professional organizations and unions, and from academics to opinion leaders.”

Experience sharing

Emphasizing the importance of everyone affected by the conflict in Turkey sharing their experiences, Doğan said, “These experiences are invaluable in enabling us to say ‘never again’ and to draw up a roadmap for achieving this. That is why we are reiterating our call as a party: please contact us if you have any information or experiences you would like to share with us. You can share anything you wish to communicate in writing with us. You can submit your reports and similar materials.”

Syria policy

Responding to a question about developments in North-East Syria, Ayşegül Doğan stated that Turkey must pursue a policy of lasting reconciliation with Syrian Kurds.

“The gains of the Kurds in Syria, the gains of the people, the formation of a democratic Syria, the preservation of the gains made so far, or the formation of a decentralized structure based on the decision of the people there, or their ability to make their own decisions, are not a risk for Turkey; if anything, they can be turned into an opportunity,” she underlined.

‘Hakan Fidan’s language is not appropriate to the process’

The DEM Party Spokesperson criticized Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s remarks on Syria, saying, “He is not using language appropriate to the process. Let us pay attention to the language he uses, his choice of words, his consistently threatening approach, his position on the Syrian issue, his distance, the relationships he has established with certain individuals, and he used during the joint press conference. We believe he prefers to engage in demagoguery. This authoritarian, arrogant language only strengthens the hands of those opposed to the process. We naturally call for an end to this language. We need a language that seeks solutions and calm. We do not need a language that escalates tensions. The unity of Syria cannot be achieved through divisive language. There is no such example in human history.”
