Spokesperson of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), Ayşegül Doğan, held a press conference at the party’s headquarters in Ankara.
Ayşegül Doğan addressed the recent developments on the agenda and the Central Executive Board meeting held by the DEM Party on Wednesday, 6 August.
Doğan began her speech by commemorating Saliha Ozan, a parliamentary staff member who was murdered. Doğan criticized the failure to provide protection to Ozan despite her request and called on Parliament to take responsibility.
Ayşegül Doğan also condemned the continued detention of 33 prisoners in Bolu High-Security F-Type Prison, even though they have completed 30-year prison sentences.
The DEM Party spokesperson said that on Wednesday, the release of five of these prisoners was once again postponed by three months.
We are at a critical crossroads
Ayşegül Doğan drew attention to the ongoing “Peace and Democratic Society Process” concerning the resolution of the Kurdish question, as well as the parliamentary commission established within this context. She described this new phase as “significant.”
On the subject of the commission debates, Ayşegül Doğan stated: “We have come to a very important, critical crossroads. We are at the heart of a threshold. We want the work to be carried out on this issue to be constructive. We have previously said that approaching the root causes of the problems is valuable. However, this commission alone cannot resolve these issues. We must come together to solve them, both as political actors and as a society.”
Work must be done on legal reforms
Ayşegül Doğan pointed to the diversity of parties represented in the commission and continued: “We are at a crossroads rarely encountered. We must approach this junction in a way that allows us to establish peace, freedom, and democracy. As the DEM Party, we will do everything we can. As a party, we will make every effort to support the steps that need to be taken. We have been preparing for this for a long time. Turkey needs democracy and equal fraternity. We want to see meaningful and constructive outcomes. It is not only about ending the armed conflict, but also about eliminating the root causes of that conflict and finding a resolution. Work must be done on legal reforms. Vital efforts are needed to build social solidarity.
How will founding politics take shape?
We also need to discuss how the founding politics of this new period will take shape. How will the state, the government, the opposition and politics and society as a whole, adapt to the new period? These are the main issues and topics we need to talk about, debate, and work on in the coming phase. We must treat this process as one of mutual change and transformation. Let us not forget: the possibilities created by this threshold can only be realized through collective struggle. Only through a strong opposition. Only through strong alliances. What we are talking about is a process that must include everyone, a shared vision of the future. Only by joining forces can we achieve the equality, fraternity, justice, freedom, and democracy we need.”
