Barzani family, a history of betrayal, Part Two

The KDP is responsible for the countless Kurdish freedom fighters, intellectuals, politicians and civilians killed. Its collaboration with Turkish fascism has political and historical causes.

The history of Kurdistan is as much a testament to legendary resistance as it is to tragic betrayal. Even in times of cruel persecution and oppression, there were Kurds who collaborated with the murderers, occupiers and colonialists. The Barzani clan and its party KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) repeatedly played an important role in this.

Diplomatic contacts with the Turkish state

The KDP, together with Turkey, made intensive diplomatic efforts to have the PKK classified internationally as a terrorist organization and put on the “terrorist list.” As a result of these dirty activities, the Kurdish freedom movement was declared internationally as a terrorist organization and its activities were banned. The KDP also played an important role in the kidnapping of Abdullah Öcalan. After Öcalan was imprisoned and isolated, it believed it had achieved its goal. With the help of collaborators within the PKK, it tried to destroy the movement from within. But the women’s movement, which was particularly attacked by the group around Osman Öcalan and the KDP, fought back with the support of Abdullah Öcalan and made a revolution in the PKK, which would make it stronger than ever. The resumption of armed struggle by the freedom movement on 1 June 2004 shocked Turkey as much as the KDP.

The Turkish state wants to destroy every Kurdish achievement

Due to its anti-Kurdish ambitions of destruction, the Turkish state was not prepared to officially recognize South Kurdistan. Its aim was to eliminate the existing federal structure. However, the resumption of armed struggle by the Kurdish freedom movement thwarted the Turkish state’s plans. It finally attacked the Zap region in a cross-border operation on 21 February 2008. It apparently wanted to test the strength of the guerrillas. After a Kobra attack helicopter was shot down and dozens of soldiers were killed during the week-long clashes, the Turkish army was forced to retreat on 28 February 2008. This attempted invasion cost the Turkish state dearly.

Recognition versus collaboration

After this defeat, the Turkish occupying state began to modify its policy. It began to recognize the status of South Kurdistan and establish official relations with the region. In return for this recognition, the KDP was to fight alongside the Republic of Turkey against the freedom movement, as it had done in the past. In particular, with the Rojava revolution and the intensification of the guerrilla struggle in 2012, the KDP clearly sided with Turkey.

The defeat it suffered against ISIS in 2014 and against the Iraqi state after the independence referendum in 2017 led to a significant reduction in the KDP’s strength. It thus placed itself even further into the hands of the Turkish regime, which had threatened to close the borders and starve out South Kurdistan during the independence referendum. This is why the KDP is currently waging war alongside the Turkish state against the Kurdish freedom movement in South Kurdistan, Rojava and Shengal. Although this war was initially fought mainly on intelligence and ideology, with the military attacks on Zînê Wertê in 2020 and Gare in 2021, the KDP is now an important part of the war, which has intensified since 2022.

The lie of the establishment of a Kurdish state

The Barzani clan and the KDP have never defended or fought for the freedom and independence of Kurdistan. They use the narrative of the establishment of a Kurdish state to protect their own family interests. They want an emirate. For this they are ready to sacrifice the other parts of Kurdistan and liquidate the revolutionary forces. The Barzani family and the KDP see the Kurdish freedom movement as a rival and obstacle and continue to attack Kurdistan in collaboration with all occupiers.

If the Kurdish public and people do not stop the collaboration and attacks of the Barzani family and the KDP with a strong response, Kurdistan will have to pay a heavy price. The Kurds and Kurdistan are in danger of being left without any status and land after the “Third World War”.

The KDP fulfills all the infrastructural and intelligence wishes of the Turkish state. When attacks are carried out on the guerrillas, the flags of the Turkish state and the KDP fly side by side. The KDP has completely opened up the region to the Turkish occupiers. It builds roads for the Turkish army, shares positions with it and fights alongside it against the Kurdish guerrillas.

The KDP has thousands of patriots, cadres and guerrilla fighters on its conscience. This goes far beyond collaboration. This is also reflected in the fact that the Turkish regime leader Erdoğan, who is driving Kurds out of their villages and having civilians murdered under the eyes of the KDP, officially thanked it for its services.
