Ben Affleck has spoken publicly about the deaths of his parents, Tim and Chris Affleck, revealing how losing both of them within two months has prompted him to look back at his childhood and reconsider the lives his parents led before and beyond their roles as his mother and father.

The actor discussed the experience during an appearance on Kerry Washington’s Street You Grew Up On podcast, where he reflected on the loss of his parents and the memories that have resurfaced since their deaths.

“My parents just died. Both of them. In April, and in June,” Affleck said, describing the losses as something that had caused him to think about his childhood “in ways that have been a little bit different.”

The deaths came in quick succession. Tim Affleck died in April from an undisclosed cause, while Chris Affleck died on June 2 at the age of 83 after pancreatic cancer. According to previous reporting by HELLO!, Chris died only two days after seeing her grandchild graduate from high school.

For Affleck, the deaths have not simply meant confronting the loss of two parents. They have also encouraged him to revisit the history of his family and, particularly, to see his mother as a person whose identity extended far beyond being his parent.

Reconsidering his mother’s life

Affleck said he had been reading letters Chris wrote to her own parents decades before she became a wife and mother. The experience gave him a different perspective on someone he had known primarily as his mother.

In those letters, he encountered a young woman with ambitions, uncertainty and plans for a future that had yet to be defined. She considered possibilities including becoming a social worker or a teacher and was engaged with the protests and political movements of her era.

Ben’s mother Chris passed away in June

That discovery appears to have been particularly significant for Affleck because it allowed him to view his mother as an individual with an independent life story.

“It was really weird for me to read these letters,” he said on the podcast, describing his realization that his mother had spent roughly three decades of her life before becoming a wife and mother.

“But of course, the thing that struck me was: This has nothing to do with me. This woman had her own whole life for 30 years that had zero to do with me.”

The observation reflects one of the more complicated aspects of losing a parent: the opportunity to encounter, sometimes only after their death, parts of their identity that existed outside the family.

Affleck said the process had deepened his appreciation for Chris and for what she gave to her children.

“I’ve certainly learned to even more deeply appreciate my mom,” he said, adding that he had come to value more fully “what she did and what the sacrifice and commitment that she made and how complete it was.”

The years Chris devoted to raising Ben and Casey

Chris’s role as a mother was closely connected to her working life. Affleck recalled that she was an elementary-school teacher who taught fifth and sixth grade in a public school.

Although her school day ended in the afternoon, Affleck remembered that she generally did not arrive home until around 5:30 or 6 p.m. Once she returned, she continued taking care of the family.

Ben and Casey’s father also passed away in 2026

The actor remembered himself and his younger brother, Casey Affleck, as energetic children who could make the demands of parenting particularly difficult.

He said that, as a child, he had not necessarily understood the extent of what his mother was doing for the family. Looking back as an adult, he now sees those sacrifices differently.

Affleck is also a parent himself. He shares three children — Violet, 20, Fin, 17, and Samuel, 14 — with his former wife, Jennifer Garner.

That experience of parenthood has given him another point of comparison as he looks back on his own upbringing. The demands of raising children can be understood differently once someone has become a parent themselves, and Affleck’s reflections suggest that his own experiences with fatherhood have contributed to how he now views Chris’s efforts on his behalf and Casey’s.

He described taking some of his mother’s work for granted when he was young, while also recognizing that this was, in a sense, what she wanted for her children.

A difficult period before his parents divorced

Affleck’s reflections also touched on a more difficult chapter in his family history.

His parents divorced when he was 11. Before the separation, Affleck said his father’s alcoholism had become increasingly difficult for the family.

He described Tim as being in poor shape at the time, saying that he drank too much, was angry and resentful, and was struggling to maintain employment.

Ben revealed that Chris sacrified everything for her sons

Affleck recalled that he was “so happy” when his parents eventually divorced, an unusually direct reflection on a family breakup that occurred during his childhood.

The separation changed the family’s circumstances. Chris remained in Massachusetts, where she raised Ben and Casey, while Tim moved to California.

According to Affleck’s account, Tim eventually became sober and later rebuilt his relationship with his sons. That history adds another dimension to the actor’s reflections on his father, whose death followed that of Chris by only a matter of weeks.

Losing both parents in a matter of weeks

The timing of the deaths has made 2026 an especially difficult year for Affleck and his family.

Chris died in June after pancreatic cancer, while Tim died in April. The circumstances surrounding Tim’s death have not been publicly disclosed in the material reported by HELLO!

The actor was 11 years old when his parents got divorced

Chris’s death came after she had achieved a significant family moment. Previous HELLO! reporting said she attended her grandchild’s high-school graduation just two days before she died.

Her death was followed by public expressions of support for Affleck and his family, including a message from Jennifer Garner, his former wife and the mother of his children.

The loss of both parents also appears to have prompted Affleck to examine his family history more closely rather than simply remembering individual events. His comments on the podcast focused not only on grief but on the process of understanding his parents as people whose lives were shaped by experiences that began long before he was born.

Seeing parents as people, not only parents

Affleck’s comments about Chris’s letters point to a broader realization that can emerge later in life: children generally know their parents through the role those parents occupy inside the family, while their parents’ earlier ambitions, disappointments and identities can remain largely unknown.

For Affleck, reading his mother’s letters offered a rare window into that earlier period.

He learned about a woman who had her own aspirations and uncertainties before becoming the person he knew as his mother. Her later choices — including becoming a teacher and raising two sons — therefore became part of a larger life story rather than the entirety of it.

That distinction appears central to Affleck’s grieving process.

His memories of Chris are not limited to her illness or final months. Instead, he has been revisiting the years she spent working, parenting and navigating a difficult marriage, as well as the ambitions she had before motherhood.

His account also places his own childhood memories alongside his adult understanding of family. The boy who once complained about coming inside or resisted his mother’s attempts to manage him can now look back with an awareness of how much work was taking place around him.

A family story viewed through adulthood

The deaths of Tim and Chris have consequently given Affleck a reason to reconsider events from decades ago.

His account of the divorce, his mother’s work, his father’s alcoholism and eventual sobriety, and the letters Chris wrote before motherhood all form part of the same family history.

The story also illustrates how memories can change as people move through different stages of their own lives. Affleck is no longer looking at his parents solely as the adults who raised him. He is also examining them as individuals with their own decisions, struggles, aspirations and limitations.

For Chris in particular, the letters provided a connection to a period of her life that existed before Affleck and Casey were born.

Affleck’s comments do not erase the difficult parts of his childhood. Instead, they place those experiences alongside a growing appreciation for what his mother contributed to her family and for the life she had before becoming a parent.

His reflections on Tim similarly acknowledge the challenges that alcoholism brought to the family while also recognizing that his father later became sober and worked to restore his relationship with his sons.

Grief and the process of looking back

Speaking about the deaths publicly for the first time has allowed Affleck to describe grief as something intertwined with memory and reassessment.

The loss of both parents in April and June has forced him to confront the end of a generation of his immediate family while also sending him back into his own past.

Rather than focusing only on the circumstances of their deaths, Affleck has been examining who his parents were, how their relationship affected his childhood and what he understands differently now that he is an adult and a parent himself.

At the center of those reflections is Chris: a teacher, a mother, a woman who had ambitions before having children and someone whose sacrifices Affleck says he appreciates more deeply following her death.

Her letters have given him a chance to meet a version of his mother he knew only indirectly — a young woman with her own hopes and plans, long before she became the mother whose efforts he now remembers with greater clarity.

For Affleck, the deaths of his parents have therefore become not only a period of profound personal loss but also an unexpected opportunity to revisit the family story from an adult perspective.

The result is a more complicated picture of childhood: one in which difficult memories, parental struggles and sacrifices can coexist with gratitude, understanding and a recognition that parents, too, have lives that began long before their children entered them.
