In a statement on August 11, the People’s Defense Forces (HPG) announced the martyrdom of commander Nûreddîn Sofî on April 6, 2021as a result of an attack by the occupying Turkish army in the Bergarê area of the Garê region, in the guerrilla-held Medya Defense Zones in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq).
The body of the fallen commander, who came from Qamishlo, hundreds of people gathered at the Watani Hospital in Derik city to join the funeral procession to Qamishlo with chants of “Şehîd Namirin” (Martyrs are immortal).
Along the route, the convoy of dozens of vehicles passed through Girkê Legê, Çilaxa, and Tirbespiyê, welcomed by people with chants and slogans paying tribute to the long-time guerrilla commander who also played a major role in the defense of Rojava.
In Tirbespiyê, Kurdish, Arab, Syriac, and Yazidi residents, as well as military and security forces, welcomed the convoy.
Speaking on behalf of the Democratic Islamic Congress, Mela Hogir Hesen saluted Sofi’s 32-year struggle.
Thousands of people gathered at the entrance to Qamişlo to join the funeral procession. Local people, representatives of the Autonomous Administration, members of political parties, and tribal leaders carried the coffin on their shoulders. A moment of silence was observed, accompanied by the slogan “Şehîd Namirin”.
The ceremony will take place at 5:00 PM at the 12 March Martyrs Stadium. The Kurdish commander will then be laid to rest at the Şehit Delîl Saruxan Cemetery.
