The body of HPG guerrilla Brûsk Reşit (Seyithan Acay), who fell as a martyr in an airstrike following clashes on Gabar Mountain on 30 July 2020, was delivered to his family 4 years and 4 months after his death.

After falling a martyr, Brûsk Reşit was buried in the cemetery of the nameless in Şirnak (Şirnex). Reşit’s family went to the city to identify the body upon the statement of the Ministry of Interior. However, the family was unable to identify the body, gave a blood sample and returned to Mardin (Mêrdîn). Despite the blood samples matching in February 2021, Brûsk Reşit’s body was not delivered to his family. After 4 years and 4 months, the body was eventually delivered as a result of the efforts of the family and lawyers.

The martyr was welcomed in front of the family’s house by hundreds of people, including relatives and friends of Brûsk Reşit. Then, Reşit’s coffin was carried to the village cemetery accompanied by the slogan “Şehîd Namirin”. After the religious duties were fulfilled, the martyr guerrilla was laid to rest.

Reaction to isolation

Following the burial procedures, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the Martyrs of Freedom. Speaking at the graveside, Salih Kuday, co-chair of the Association for Solidarity and Assistance with Families Who Lost Their Relatives in the Cradle of Civilizations (MEBYA-DER), drew attention to the isolation imposed on Kurdish people’s leader Abdullah Öcalan and said: “We are burying young bodies every day due to this ongoing isolation.”

Noting that the government insisted on isolation in order to maintain its existence, Kuday said: “As long as isolation continues, blood will continue to flow and massacres will continue not only in Kurdistan but throughout the Middle East. We are calling once again to hold the hand of peace that is being extended to you, saying ‘I can stop this blood in a week’. Hold this hand so that peace can come to these lands. The tears of parents will stop now.”

A condolence tent for Martyr Brûsk Reşit was put up in the village.
