Former American tennis star CoCo Vandeweghe is recovering after suffering significant facial injuries following a serious fall while walking to Wimbledon, an accident that briefly landed her in hospital before she returned to her broadcasting duties at the tournament.
The 34-year-old, who retired from professional tennis in 2023, revealed that the incident occurred on her way to the All England Club. She later shared details of the accident on social media, explaining that the fall resulted in a bitten-through lip, a fractured chin, and two chipped front teeth.
Despite the severity of the injuries, Vandeweghe said her recovery has progressed well. She confirmed that her stitches have been removed, her damaged teeth have been repaired, and she has resumed her role with ESPN’s Wimbledon broadcast team.
Reflecting on the experience, Vandeweghe expressed appreciation for the people who supported her throughout the ordeal. She thanked a close friend who immediately came to her aid, as well as her mother and fiancé, Daniel, who traveled to London to be by her side. She also acknowledged the medical team responsible for her treatment and the colleagues who regularly checked on her during her recovery.
To update fans, Vandeweghe posted a series of photographs documenting the days following the accident. The images included her being transported on a stretcher by paramedics, receiving treatment inside an ambulance, undergoing dental work, and later returning courtside with a microphone as part of ESPN’s on-air coverage.
Adding a touch of humor to the difficult experience, she joked in the caption that while Wimbledon’s semifinal lineup was confirmed, she hoped her teeth would soon be as well. The lighthearted remark drew an outpouring of supportive messages from fans, many of whom wished her a quick recovery and expressed relief that she was healing.
Vandeweghe enjoyed a successful professional career before retiring from the sport. She reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals twice, in 2015 and 2017, and captured the 2018 US Open women’s doubles title alongside Australian star Ash Barty.
Her retirement came after years of battling recurring injuries, including persistent problems with her right ankle and left hand. At the time, she explained that the physical demands of professional tennis had become increasingly difficult to manage, preventing her from competing at the level she expected of herself.
