According to RojNews, the Court of Appeals has issued a decision to release journalist Süleyman Ahmet, who has been held in prison for over 1.5 years. The RojNews editor had been sentenced to three years in prison.

No news had been received for months from journalist Ahmet, who was arrested by KDP forces at the Semalka Border Gate while crossing from Rojava into South Kurdistan on 25 October 2023. Ahmet was sentenced to 3 years in prison at the hearing held at the Duhok Courthouse on 29 July 2024.

Süleyman Ahmet was born in 1992 in the Jindires district of Afrin, the youngest of nine siblings. After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Al-Baath University in Homs, he returned to Afrin and has worked for the independent Kurdish media since 2012. In 2018, he reported on the Turkish invasion of Afrin and uncovered atrocities. He only left the region when a large part of the population was evacuated after 58 days of resistance against Turkey’s military superiority and its jihadist mercenary troops.
