A Los Angeles court has determined that the man charged in the killing of veteran actor James Handy is currently unfit to participate in legal proceedings, leading to the case being transferred to a specialized mental health court.
The defendant, 44-year-old Michael Gledhill, is accused of fatally stabbing the 81-year-old actor at a residence in Tarzana on June 3, 2026. Prosecutors say the incident occurred at the home shared by Gledhill, his mother, and the victim.
Court Raises Concerns Over Mental Competency
Gledhill did not appear in court during the latest hearing and remained in custody. His defense attorney informed the judge that he was not in a condition to understand or assist in his legal defense, prompting a formal request for a competency evaluation.

The court accepted the concerns and transferred the proceedings to a mental health division for further assessment. A bail amount was set at $2.02 million, and the next hearing is scheduled for June 22.
Details of the Incident Under Investigation
Authorities stated that emergency services were called to the residence following a distressing emergency call made around 9:30 a.m. The caller reportedly made alarming statements before the call ended.

When officers arrived at the scene on Erwin Street, they found James Handy suffering from a stab wound to the chest in the front yard. He was transported to hospital but later died from his injuries.
Police allege that Gledhill identified himself to responding officers shortly after their arrival and indicated he was responsible for the incident.
Mental Health Concerns and Background
Family members have indicated that Gledhill had previously been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had recently stopped taking prescribed medication. His condition is said to have worsened in the months leading up to the incident, with increasing signs of paranoia.

Investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the case, including reports of disturbances at the home prior to the incident. No official motive has been confirmed.
Career of James Handy
James Handy had a long career spanning more than five decades in film and television. He was widely recognized for supporting roles across numerous productions.

His credits included appearances in Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji, Logan, Arachnophobia, The Rocketeer, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and K-9, among others, establishing him as a familiar character actor in Hollywood.
The investigation into the case remains ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and assess the defendant’s mental competency.
