Dame Prue Leith, the former long-standing judge of The Great British Bake Off, has shared guidance for her successor, Nigella Lawson, as she steps into the role.
Leith, who joined the show in 2017 when it transitioned from the BBC to Channel 4, served alongside Paul Hollywood for nine years. She described her advice to Lawson simply: “Just enjoy it, because you’ll never have a nicer job.”
Reflecting on her departure, Leith explained that the decision came after two years of consideration. “I’ve never wanted to overstay my welcome in anything,” she said. “Just like you don’t want to stay too long at a dinner party, it’s important to leave while you’re happy and enjoying it and people aren’t fed up with you.”
Despite stepping away from the baking series, Leith revealed she rarely watches television herself. “If I do, it’ll be a travel programme, because my husband likes things involving people going to extraordinary places,” she said.
Leith has not slowed down professionally since leaving the show. Earlier this week, she made a striking appearance at London Fashion Week, walking the runway in an orange, eco-conscious suit designed by Vin + Omi. The ensemble was crafted from holly sourced from King Charles’ private estate, part of the designers’ ongoing project to repurpose materials from the monarch’s estates into sustainable fashion.
Her continued public engagements underline that, while she may have left the Bake Off tent, Leith remains active and influential across culinary and cultural spheres.
