DEM Party Co-Chairs Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan visited former HDP executives held in prison on Thursday.
The Co-Chairs first visited Figen Yüksekdağ and Semra Güzel in Kandıra Prison, then Selahattin Demirtaş and Selçuk Mızraklı in Edirne Prison.
After the visits, Tuncer Bakırhan made a statement in front of Edirne Prison, saying that their friends were in good spirits and in good health, and added, “They made some very valuable suggestions. They stated that they would fulfill their duties and responsibilities to ensure that this process moves forward.”
Bakırhan added, “In a process where we are discussing peace and weapons are ceremonially laid down, those on trial in the Kobanî Conspiracy Case—Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ, and our other friends—need to be by our side. We need them to carry this process forward.”
Drawing attention to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruling on Selahattin Demirtaş, Bakırhan said, “In order for this process to proceed in a more qualified and better manner, our friends who are on trial in the Kobanî Conspiracy Case must be released, taking into account the latest ruling of the ECHR.”
Tülay Hatimoğulları also pointed out that the ECHR ruling was extremely comprehensive and binding, stating, “In accordance with this ruling, our friends must not remain behind bars for even a minute and must be released immediately.”
Tülay Hatimoğulları continued: “In addition to all this, we are in a process where we are talking about the construction of peace and a democratic society. In this period when weapons are silenced and the language of peace rises, we naturally believe that such a result must be implemented urgently. This will bring immense joy to Turkey’s society—Turks, Kurds, Laz, Circassians, and people from all 72 ethnic groups. It will make a huge contribution to strengthening and deepening the belief in this process.”
