The Central Executive Committee (MYK) of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) convened for an extraordinary meeting in Ankara on Tuesday. The focus is on assessing the symbolic laying down of arms by the PKK’s “Group for Peace and Democratic Society” in southern Kurdistan (northern Iraq) last week, as well as the latest political developments.

The meeting is chaired by the co-chairs, Tülay Hatimoğulları and Tuncer Bakırhan. Among other things, the impact of the latest call by Abdullah Öcalan, who is considered the driving force behind the initiative, will be discussed. The party leadership will also discuss the role of parliament in a possible peace process. The establishment of a parliamentary commission to monitor further steps is under consideration as well.

Another item on the agenda is the planned series of talks by the Imrali delegation of the DEM party. The members—Pervin Buldan, Özgür Faik Erol, and Mithat Sancar—plan to meet with Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç, MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, and the chairman of the Future Party, Ahmet Davutoğlu, among others, starting today. The aim is to exchange views on ways to achieve a political solution to the Kurdish question. This will be followed by talks with CHP leader Özgür Özel on Wednesday.

The DEM party sees the latest developments as a possible new chapter in the struggle for peace and democracy in Turkey. A statement from party spokesperson Ayşegül Doğan is also expected during the meeting.
