The Democratic Unity Initiative held its second meeting in Van. The meeting, held at the Van Bar Association building, was attended by the initiative’s co-spokespersons, Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit and Mehmet Kamaç, along with many others.

Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit stated that they are going through a historic process following Abdullah Öcalan’s “Call for Peace and a Democratic Society,” saying, “The Kurdish people have been struggling and resisting for centuries. We want to build a common life for all peoples and beliefs in these lands. That is why we took the initiative.”

Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit noted that they will hold a conference in the Doğubayazıt district of Ağrı on July 26, and another conference will be held in Mardin.

“We will dedicate our first conference to Ehmedê Xanî. The content of the conference will focus on the importance of Kurdish unity. The aim of the conferences we will hold is to further strengthen our efforts,” she added.

Mehmet Kamaç stated: “Our first task is expansion and strengthening. To expand the initiative, we will work with different groups that we have not been able to meet with until now. We are pleased that a wide range of groups are participating in the initiative. We are fully aware of the importance of the Kurdish people’s co-existence with other peoples living in Kurdistan and of Kurdish unity. At this meeting, we will discuss what needs to be done.”
