For a figure whose public image has long been associated with luxury, spectacle and high-profile brands, Donald Trump’s history with automobiles offers another window into his taste for expensive and distinctive possessions. His reported collection over the years has included Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, Lamborghini, Ferrari and even an early Tesla Roadster, while his time in the White House placed him inside one of the most recognizable vehicles in the world: the heavily armored presidential limousine known as “The Beast.”
Trump’s relationship with cars, however, changed dramatically when he entered the presidency. According to HELLO!, presidents and vice presidents are not permitted to drive themselves on public roads under long-standing Secret Service protocols. The restrictions trace their origins to the security changes introduced following the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
As a result, although Trump has spoken about enjoying driving, his years as president have largely meant being transported rather than taking the wheel. HELLO! The Silver Cloud belonged to an era when Rolls-Royce represented a particularly traditional interpretation of luxury motoring. Its place in Trump’s early collection also predates the modern, highly customized image associated with some of his later vehicles.
Decades later, shortly before his first presidential election in 2016, Trump was photographed behind the wheel of a new Rolls-Royce Phantom.
