Reports indicate that the imprisoned writer Hüseyin Sürgeç was sentenced to 11 days of solitary confinement by the prison administration. He was placed in a single cell on April 10, and all of his communication rights were suspended during the punishment.

Sürgeç was imprisoned on February 15, 1999, based on a legal case brought against him. At the time, the now-defunct and unlawful State Security Court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Sürgeç was first imprisoned in Malatya (Meletî) and was later successively transferred to prisons in Bingöl (Çewlîg), Diyarbakır (Amed), Maraş (Elbistan), and Istanbul Maltepe.

Most recently, three months ago, he was transferred to Tekirdağ Type F No. 2 Prison, which is known as one of the centers of arbitrary rights violations.

Sürgeç suffers from severe joint rheumatism and a heart condition. During his imprisonment, he suffered a heart spasm and is also known to have an intestinal disorder.

Over the course of his 26 years in prison, Sürgeç authored the books ‘Tears of Dersim’ and ‘Crazy Ejma’.

Sürgeç had also spent many years in the same prison as Veysi Aktaş. Although Aktaş was due for release last year, it was postponed by another year.
