Veteran broadcaster Jon Snow, long regarded as one of the most trusted faces in UK television journalism, has revealed that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2023, marking a deeply personal chapter in his life after decades on screen.
The 78-year-old, who spent more than 30 years as a leading news presenter, has spoken publicly about his condition while also taking part in a clinical research trial. His diagnosis has prompted a broader reflection on his career, family life, and the changes he is now navigating.
Life with his wife and family
Jon Snow lives in north London with his wife, Dr Precious Lunga, whom he married in 2010. Lunga, originally from Zimbabwe, is an epidemiologist and entrepreneur with a strong academic background in neuroscience, having studied in Edinburgh and Cambridge before working in global public health initiatives focused on HIV research and prevention.
The couple first met in 2001 on the Caribbean island of Mustique and built a relationship that eventually led to marriage nearly a decade later. When they are not in London, they spend time at a countryside cottage in the North Wessex Downs.
Becoming a father later in life
In March 2021, Snow and Lunga welcomed their son, Tafara, via surrogacy after facing a long period marked by medical challenges and miscarriages. The arrival of their child in his 70s, Snow has said, brought a strong sense of fulfillment and stability to his personal life.
He has previously described fatherhood as something he embraces without concern about age, saying his focus remains on family bonds rather than numbers. Snow also has two daughters from a previous long-term relationship with human rights lawyer Madeleine Colvin.
Living with Alzheimer’s
Snow has acknowledged that he initially considered keeping his diagnosis private due to concerns about stigma surrounding cognitive decline. He has since chosen to speak openly about his experience, noting that the condition does not affect him constantly but appears in episodes that he continues to manage.
He is also featured in an upcoming documentary that follows his journey with Alzheimer’s, alongside his wife. The film also includes his involvement in a separate investigative storyline examining environmental damage linked to mining activity in a southern African community.
Reflecting on his condition, Snow has spoken about focusing on what he can still learn and contribute, despite the challenges of the disease.
The documentary is scheduled for broadcast later this month.
