Fashion entrepreneur Karen Millen has spoken candidly about the personal and financial struggles that followed the sale of her globally recognised fashion business, revealing how she rebuilt her life after losing her fortune and declaring bankruptcy.
Millen, who co-founded the successful fashion label with former husband Kevin Stanford, sold the company in her 40s in a deal worth around £100 million. What initially appeared to be the beginning of a comfortable early retirement quickly became one of the most difficult periods of her life.

The designer said the aftermath of the sale left her emotionally and physically exhausted. Alongside stepping away from the company she had spent decades building, she also experienced the breakdown of her 27-year marriage. Losing both her business identity and personal relationship within a short period created a deep sense of uncertainty.
Millen described feeling disconnected from the purpose that had driven much of her adult life. While her children remained her focus, she admitted that adjusting to life without the brand bearing her name was challenging.
Her difficulties intensified after a series of unsuccessful financial investments led to severe losses. The setbacks ultimately pushed the mother of three into bankruptcy, wiping out much of the wealth she had accumulated and forcing her to give up the home where she had lived for two decades.
Reflecting on that chapter, Millen acknowledged the emotional toll of the experience but said it also became an important lesson in resilience and personal growth.
Returning to Work
By the age of 60, Millen decided to re-enter the business world. However, contractual agreements tied to the sale of her fashion label prevented her from using her own name commercially, something she described as particularly painful given the years spent building the brand’s reputation.
Despite those restrictions, she said she still felt motivated to create and contribute to the industry. Millen is now working behind the scenes on new projects alongside her daughter Jordan and is also involved with initiatives aimed at supporting female entrepreneurs.
Among those efforts is her work with the Creative Women’s Platform, which focuses on mentoring women, building confidence and helping develop business skills.
Millen said entering her 60s marked the beginning of a fresh chapter rather than a setback. She described the period as an opportunity to focus on creativity again while embracing the experience and perspective gained through years of personal and professional highs and lows.
