Television presenter Kate Garraway has spoken publicly for the first time about her new relationship with economist and journalist Liam Halligan, following a difficult period in her personal life marked by the death of her husband in early 2024.
Garraway, known for her role on Good Morning Britain, was widowed in January 2024 after her husband Derek Draper died following a prolonged illness linked to Covid-related complications. The couple had been married since 2005 and share two children, Darcey, 20, and Billy, 16.
Now beginning a new chapter, Garraway has been linked with Halligan, an Irish-British economist, broadcaster, and co-presenter of a political podcast. The pair are understood to have known each other for some time through professional and social circles.
Speaking about the relationship during an appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show, Garraway described the experience as positive but still in its early stages. She said the pair had not yet had the opportunity to spend much time together due to personal commitments, adding that she was cautious about discussing it publicly too soon.
Garraway also revealed that family matters have taken priority in recent weeks, noting that her parents have been unwell. She said this had limited her availability for personal time and social plans, particularly as she supported her family through health challenges.
Despite the difficulties, she acknowledged that the new relationship has brought a welcome sense of lightness into her life, while emphasising that things are progressing slowly and without pressure.
Halligan has also previously spoken about their connection, noting that the two have known each other for years and became closer after both experienced significant changes in their personal lives. He has described their bond as a developing friendship that has gradually grown over time.
The pair were recently seen spending time together in Essex, where Halligan is from, in an informal setting that included a visit to a local pub where he was performing with a band. The low-key outing added to public interest in their evolving relationship.
For now, both appear focused on keeping things private and unhurried as they navigate this new stage in their lives.
