Kiki Shepard, longtime co-host of the iconic television program Showtime at the Apollo, has died at the age of 74. Shepard passed away unexpectedly on March 16 in Los Angeles due to a massive heart attack.
Shepard gained fame for her role on the syndicated series from 1987 to 2002, sharing the stage with hosts including Steve Harvey, Sinbad, Mo’Nique, Mark Curry, and Rudy Rush. She became a fixture at the Harlem theater, welcoming both aspiring and professional performers to the famed Apollo stage. Her fashion-forward presence earned her the nickname “Apollo Queen of Fashion,” with each episode showcasing her distinctive wardrobe.
Born on July 15, 1951, in Tyler, Texas, Shepard attended Howard University, where she became a charter member of the D.C. Repertory Dance Company. She began her career as a professional dancer, following in the footsteps of her parents, who were competitive dancers. In the early 1970s, she toured internationally with several dance troupes and performed at New York’s Delacourt Summer Shakesperian Festival in 1976.
Shepard later transitioned to Broadway, appearing in ensemble roles in productions such as Bubbling Brown Sugar, Comin’ Uptown, Reggae, Your Arms Too Short to Box with God, and Porgy and Bess. Television soon became her primary platform, with guest appearances on A Different World, Baywatch, NYPD Blue, Grey’s Anatomy, and Everybody Hates Chris, often appearing as herself. She also had a minor role in the 1978 film The Wiz.
Beyond entertainment, Shepard was deeply committed to raising awareness of Sickle Cell Disease. After witnessing the impact of the disease on a friend’s family, she began working with the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America in 1993. In 2006, she founded The KIS Foundation Inc., which focuses on education, fundraising, and support for families affected by the illness.
News of Shepard’s passing has prompted an outpouring of tributes from fans and colleagues alike. Many remembered her as a trailblazer in Black entertainment and a champion for the community. TV personality Elgin Charles described her as “a giant” whose legacy as a loyal friend and advocate will endure.
Shepard’s contributions to stage, television, and philanthropy have left a lasting mark on the entertainment world and the lives of those she supported.
