The Kurdish Women’s Union Platform condemned the decision by Iraq’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to ban Kurdish language courses and exams at universities in Kirkuk, Mosul, and Diyala.

Stating that the ban is a clear attack on the identity, culture, and language rights of the Kurdish people, the Platform pointed out that this decision contradicts Article 4 of the Iraqi Constitution, which recognizes Kurdish and Arabic as the official languages of the country.

“Kurdish is not just a means of communication; it is our identity, our history, and our existence,” said the Platform and remarked that the ban amounts to cultural denial.

The Platform noted that this unjust decision was withdrawn thanks to the strong reactions from the Kurdish people and political and social actors, and described it as “an important step in the Kurdish people’s struggle to protect their right to language.”

The Platform said, “Our language is our honor, and we will defend it with all our might,” calling for respect for the linguistic rights of the Kurdish people and for these rights to be guaranteed in all areas of life.

The platform called on the government and relevant institutions to take concrete steps to ensure that Kurdish can be used freely everywhere, from education to the public sphere.
