The Basque trade union LAB issued a statement welcoming the action by guerrillas on 11 July.
The statement said: “Following the historic appeal made a few weeks ago by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, which opened the door to hope for a solution to the conflict in Kurdistan, the Kurdish movement has now outlined the next steps to be taken.”
The statement welcomed the PKK disarmament ceremony that took place in Suleimaniya, following the announcement of dissolution and disarmament made public in May by the Kurdish liberation movement. “We at LAB welcome these initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict, and we hope that these steps will contribute to building a scenario of just and lasting peace in Kurdistan.”
LAB also requested “once again, the release of Öcalan, so that he can continue to work freely on the implementation of the principles he outlined in his written contribution, ‘Manifesto for a Democratic Society.’ However, it is important to keep in mind that this process cannot move forward exclusively through the guerrillas actions. It must be approached correctly, and all necessary measures must be taken.”
LAB joined “the call and the defence of the Kurdish people’s right to build their future through peace, dialogue and negotiation.
LAB joins the voices from Euskal Herria and other parts of the world that show its commitment to the Kurdish people and their right to peace, justice and freedom.”
