Veteran Republican Senator Mitch McConnell has shared his first public update after weeks away from Capitol Hill, confirming that he is recovering following a fall that briefly left him unconscious. The 84-year-old lawmaker also expressed his determination to return to work and complete the remainder of his Senate term.
McConnell released a new photograph showing him seated in a hospital chair alongside his wife, Elaine Chao. In the image, he appeared in good spirits while holding a newspaper, offering reassurance after his extended absence sparked widespread concern about his health.
In a message addressed to the people of Kentucky, McConnell thanked supporters for their encouragement and acknowledged the many questions surrounding his condition. He explained that he had initially preferred to keep the details of his health private, noting that many people of his generation are reluctant to publicly discuss the challenges that come with aging.
The senator revealed that he was hospitalized after suffering a fall last month. Medical evaluations determined that he did not sustain any broken bones or a concussion, and doctors also ruled out a heart attack, stroke, tumors, and internal bleeding.
Although the incident caused him to briefly lose consciousness, McConnell said physicians have continued conducting extensive tests to determine what led to the episode. During his hospital stay, he was also diagnosed with a mild case of pneumonia.
After receiving treatment, McConnell has now been transferred from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility, where he is focusing on regaining his strength. He said his recovery is progressing steadily but acknowledged that his doctors have not yet cleared him to resume voting in the Senate.
Despite remaining away from Capitol Hill, McConnell said he has continued working closely with his staff and Senate Republican colleagues throughout his recovery.
The Kentucky senator previously announced that he will retire when his current Senate term concludes in January. However, he emphasized that his commitment to serving his constituents remains unchanged and said he intends to complete the responsibilities voters entrusted to him before leaving office.
McConnell added that he looks forward to returning to the Senate as soon as his medical team determines it is safe and promised to continue providing updates on his recovery.
His statement follows weeks of speculation about his health after his prolonged absence from Washington. Video recorded during the medical emergency also showed first responders transporting him from his Washington residence for treatment.
The latest health setback comes after several medical incidents in recent years. McConnell experienced highly publicized freezing episodes during public appearances in 2023 and has suffered multiple falls, including one earlier that year that resulted in a concussion.
First elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984, McConnell served as Senate Republican leader from 2007 until 2025, making him the longest-serving Republican leader in the chamber’s history.
