Vida Rabbani and Motahareh Goonei, two political prisoners in the women’s ward of Evin Prison, have been on hunger strike since 18 November, protesting the lack of access to medical care for their cellmates, Narges Mohammadi and Warisha Moradi.

In a letter from Evin Prison, Rabbani wrote about Narges Mohammadi’s worrying condition, stating that prison officials have neglected her “severe surgical wound,” “bedsores,” “the unsanitary condition of the room and restroom,” “the lack of medical facilities,” and other issues.

In her letter, Rabbani also mentioned that Warisha Moradi, another cellmate, developed a “duodenal ulcer” following a prolonged hunger strike protesting the death sentence issued against her.

The imprisoned journalist added that in the past, women prisoners in Evin have often reached the same level of despair over the injustices they face. She noted that they have “rebelled and stripped themselves,” and that “many have resorted to suicide and self-harm for the same reasons.”
