At a time when the search for a political solution in Syria continues, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and United Nations representatives met on 15 August 2025, in Damascus.
The PYD delegation, headed by Co-Chair of the General Relations Office Sema Begdaş, included members of the party’s Damascus branch, Mihemed Emin and Feyruz Xelil. The UN side was represented by members of the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen’s team and Abdulleziz Abdulleziz, Head of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
During the talks, the parties discussed Syria’s current situation, possibilities for a political solution, the development of relations among social actors, and building trust between components.
The PYD delegation drew attention to the discourse of hatred and hostility targeting the Kurdish people and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), stressing that such approaches undermine political solutions. They emphasized that countering hate speech is vital for strengthening coexistence.
UN: We reject hate speech, we support dialogue
The UN representatives stated that they reject all forms of hate speech, and affirmed their support for the agreement reached on March 10 between Syrian Interim Government President Ahmed al-Shar’i and SDF General Commander Mazloum Abdi.
The UN delegation also reiterated their support for all efforts toward building a new Syria based on justice and equality, underlining the need to strengthen internal dialogue.
A free and democratic Syria is possible
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides stressed that the hopes of the peoples of Syria to establish a free and democratic country can only be realized through the participation of all political actors and continuous dialogue. They added that the international community also bears responsibility in this regard.
