The Red Party held a press conference at the Çand Amed Congress Center in Amed (tr: Diyarbakır) regarding the ongoing process for a resolution to the Kurdish question.
A number of representatives from political parties and civil society organizations attended the meeting, where a banner reading “We will achieve peace, equal citizenship, and socialism together” was displayed.
Speaking at the event, Red Party Co-Spokesperson Candan Polat emphasized the importance of the process that began with Abdullah Öcalan’s February 27 “Call for Peace and Democratic Society” and stressed that strengthening the struggle for peace in the social sphere is a revolutionary task.
Polat said that the socialist movement in Turkey has historically supported the Kurdish people’s struggle for equality and freedom.
Polat referred to the parliamentary commission established in relation to the process, which, she said, must be carried out transparently, with the participation of the people and democratic organizations.
The Red Party made the following proposals for a solution:
– All parties, including Abdullah Öcalan, must be allowed to engage in free debate,
– Political parties, trade unions, and mass organizations must be included in the process,
– The appointment of trustees must be ended, and dismissed mayors must be reinstated,
– All political prisoners, especially Selahattin Demirtaş, Figen Yüksekdağ, and those detained in connection with the Gezi protests, must be released,
– Obstacles to the use of the Kurdish language in public life must be removed,
– Women must be granted equal and effective representation in the peace process.
The meeting ended with the party’s Secretary General, Onur Emre Yağan, answering questions from participants.
