The Kurdish Women’s Office for International Relations (REPAK) has strongly condemned the death sentence against Iranian labor rights activist Sharifeh Mohammadi and called on the international community to show solidarity and protest.
Sharifeh Mohammadi was arrested in Rasht in December 2023. In July 2024, a revolutionary court sentenced her to death for alleged “anti-state propaganda.” After appeals, the sentence was initially overturned in October, but was reimposed in February and recently upheld by Iran’s Supreme Court. This means that the 45-year-old woman could be executed at any moment.
The REPAK statement, which describes the verdict as an attack on the lives and rights of women in Iran, includes the following:
“When we look at regimes that have defended themselves and maintained their existence through war and destruction throughout history, we see that they have never been able to establish peace and tranquility in their countries, but rather have been driven into ever deeper chaos. The Mullah regime in Iran has also failed to stand by its people even in the most critical times, refusing to listen to their voices and demands. Instead of defending the interests of the people, it has resorted to increasing violence day by day, pushing the country into a dead-end.
There are many examples of this throughout history: regimes that based their power solely on monopoly and ignored the demands of the people have never been able to maintain their existence, while regimes that stood by their people in the face of injustice and inequality and strove to find solutions have always succeeded.
The death sentence handed down to Sherifeh Mohammadi, who fought against human rights violations, violence, exploitation, and injustice, is not based on a justice system founded on the rule of law, but rather on a mindset that safeguards male dominance and targets women’s right to life. Sherifeh Mohammadi, who lives in the city of Rasht, was arrested in December 2023 on charges of “anti-state propaganda.” On July 4, 2024, she was sentenced to death by the Iranian Revolutionary Court. Following an appeal, this decision was overturned on December 12, 2024. Nevertheless, just two months later, on February 13, 2025, the Second Chamber of the Revolutionary Court reaffirmed the same sentence.
Like hundreds of women fighting for their freedom, she too became a target of the regime. The people did not remain silent in the face of this injustice, and they will not remain silent because every silence paves the way for new injustices and prepares the ground for their legitimization under the mask of law.
The Mullah regime in Iran has repeatedly proven that it is the enemy not only of women but of everyone who defends human rights and raises their voice. Thousands of people have been thrown into prisons for various reasons, and the fate of many remains unknown. Demanding rights has been criminalized, and death has been portrayed as the only solution. In such a place where such severe oppression and tyranny reign, silence or retreat is not an option. Instead of seeking solutions, every attempt is deemed a threat to the male-dominated system and suppressed by force. All of this is happening in plain sight of the world and is escalating day by day.
We, as REPAK, call on the Iranian regime to put an end to crimes against human rights, systematic attacks against women, and the death penalty. The only path to a solution and peace is through democratic understanding, the protection of the people’s voice, and the safeguarding of rights. We also appeal to the international democratic community: be the voice of the people who seek freedom, oppose executions everywhere, and show solidarity.”
