King Charles III received an unexpected public endorsement from Sir Rod Stewart during a high-profile event marking the 50th anniversary of The King’s Trust at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Monday evening.
The celebration brought together a host of entertainers and public figures, including Rita Ora, Anne-Marie and Craig David, as the monarch met guests throughout the evening.

One of the most talked-about moments came during King Charles’s interaction with Rod Stewart. While greeting the King, the veteran musician congratulated him on his recent diplomatic visit to the United States and praised his performance during the trip.

Stewart, 81, commended the monarch’s handling of the visit before making a joking remark that drew laughter from nearby attendees. The singer referenced the King’s conduct in America and suggested he had “put that little rat bag in his place,” though he did not mention anyone by name.

King Charles appeared to remain composed during the exchange, offering no visible reaction as those around them reacted with amusement.
The comment was widely interpreted as a reference to Donald Trump, with whom Stewart has had a complicated relationship in recent years. The pair were previously neighbours in Florida and were once considered friendly acquaintances.

However, Stewart has publicly distanced himself from the former US president, expressing disappointment over both political decisions and personal behaviour. In earlier remarks, the singer said Trump had changed into “somebody I didn’t know,” indicating that their friendship had faded over time.
The exchange came shortly after King Charles concluded a four-day visit to the United States that attracted significant international attention. The trip included meetings with American leaders and a landmark address to a joint session of Congress.
During the speech, the King balanced humour with broader geopolitical concerns. Referencing Britain’s colonial history with America, he joked that King George never visited the United States and assured lawmakers he was not arriving as part of a “cunning rearguard action.”
He also addressed growing global instability, warning that the international landscape had become increasingly volatile and emphasising the need for cooperation between allies.
“The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone,” the monarch told members of Congress while underscoring the enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.
Following the address, Trump publicly praised the speech, describing it as impressive and joking that he felt “very jealous” of the reception it received.
