The final days of legendary New Zealand actor Sam Neill have come into clearer focus following confirmation of the health complications that led to his death. The celebrated performer, best known worldwide for portraying Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, died on July 13 at the age of 78 after developing pneumonia, following years of treatment for blood cancer.
Neill had previously overcome angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma with CAR-T cell therapy, an advanced cancer treatment that helped place his disease into remission. However, the intensive therapies that successfully eliminated the cancer also left his immune system significantly weakened, making him more vulnerable to serious infections.
A representative for the actor confirmed that pneumonia ultimately claimed his life. Before falling ill, Neill had remained professionally active, completing four film and television projects over the past year while continuing to oversee his award-winning winery, Two Paddocks, in New Zealand. Those productions are expected to be released in the coming months.

Australian journalist Laura Tingle, who was previously in a relationship with Neill, said his body had endured years of intensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy. While those treatments successfully eliminated the lymphoma, they left his immune defenses severely compromised, making it increasingly difficult to recover from later illnesses.
Neill was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2022 after noticing swollen glands during promotional events for Jurassic World Dominion. Following several years of treatment, he announced in April 2026 that he was cancer-free, a milestone celebrated by fans around the world.
His family announced his passing on July 13, sharing that he died peacefully in Sydney while surrounded by loved ones. They noted that although his death came unexpectedly, they found comfort in knowing he had remained free of cancer. They also thanked the medical team at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for the care provided during his final illness.
Throughout his cancer journey, Neill spoke candidly about confronting mortality while continuing to embrace life. In a widely remembered interview during his treatment, he remarked that he was not afraid of death but wished for more time to enjoy the vineyard he had built, watch his grandchildren grow, and continue pursuing the passions that defined his life.
