Mills, 53, is understood to have instructed legal representatives as he builds a case challenging the circumstances of his departure after nearly three decades working across BBC radio networks. His exit from the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show followed a period of internal scrutiny linked to a historical police inquiry involving allegations of sexual offences.
The investigation in question dates back to a case opened in 2016 and later closed in 2019 without charges, with authorities citing insufficient evidence.

At the centre of the dispute is a disagreement over what information was shared with senior BBC management when the matter first surfaced. Mills is understood to maintain that full details of the inquiry, including the age of the individual involved in the allegation, were disclosed at the time.
