The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Internal Security Forces arrested 79 mercenaries in October during six targeted operations against suspected cells of the terrorist organization “Islamic State” (ISIS). According to the SDF statement on Tuesday, the detainees include two high-ranking cell leaders.

The operations took place in several regions of North-East Syria, including Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, and eastern Aleppo. During the operations, the forces and their partners from the international anti-ISIS coalition also seized weapons and incriminating material, including plans for attacks on civilian facilities.

According to the SDF, a total of 76 anti-ISIS operations have been carried out since January. Seven ISIS members were killed, including two ringleaders, and 175 mercenaries were arrested, including five leading members of the jihadist militia.

The SDF emphasized that the operations are part of an ongoing security campaign to prevent the return or reorganization of ISIS in northeastern Syria. Despite the group’s territorial defeat, the threat posed by sleeper cells and organized structures remains high, the statement said.
