The forest fire, which began at noon in Hêni and spread to nearby villages in the Fis Plain of Amed’s Lice district, has been partially contained.
Amed Metropolitan Municipality co-mayors Serra Bucak and Doğan Hatun are coordinating the firefighting efforts on the ground. Speaking to journalists, Serra Bucak stated that the fire has not yet been fully extinguished, and continued: “The scale of the fire is very large. Unfortunately, weather conditions and the wind are the biggest factors preventing the fire from being extinguished. However, a wide coordination is being carried out on the ground with the disaster coordination team and the relevant institutions of our Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality. With great dedication, efforts are being made to bring the fire under control. But there are still fires breaking out in different spots. The fire in Hani has been contained, and in Lice it will be fully under control within a few hours.”
Bucak noted that the two helicopters available at the Provincial Forestry Directorate were being used to extinguish fires in the provinces of Adana and Semsûr (Adıyaman), and she extended her well wishes to everyone affected by the fire.
Serra Bucak added: “Unfortunately, the fires threaten the lives of our animals and pose a major risk to the rural population. The strength of the wind has made the work of firefighters and emergency response teams even more difficult.”
She thanked the local community, district organizations, provincial and district co-mayors, disaster coordination units, firefighting teams from neighboring provinces, the ecology movement, and all activists who showed solidarity and contributed to the firefighting efforts, emphasizing that the teams’ work is still ongoing.
